NCC Participates in 2012 Walk4Hearing
On Sunday, November 6, NCC participated in Hearing Loss Association of America’s (HLAA) Washington, D.C. Walk4Hearing for the fourth consecutive year. We are proud to be a three-year sponsor of the event, which raises awareness and works to eliminate the stigma related to hearing loss. Team NCC, which was comprised of employees, family members (both human and canine), and friends raised over $3,000 in donations for HLAA, with the money going to programs and services benefiting individuals with hearing loss. Our strong fundraising efforts enabled us to eclipse the amount we raised for the 2011 Walk4Hearing; and because donations will be accepted until mid-December, we will continue driving to reach this year’s goal of $5,000.
Participants were treated to a crisp, sun-splashed fall morning in scenic West Potomac Park for the 5k walk around the shimmering Tidal Basin. Prior to the walk, Ronnie Adler, HLAA’s Walk4Hearing director, warmed up the crowd by encouraging smartphone users to view live captioning of her speech, in which she acknowledged the top local fundraisers. After posing for our annual team photo in front of an antique fire truck brought by the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department, NCC joined the other 37 teams to make our way around the Tidal Basin. During the brisk walk, we took in the charming sights of the Jefferson Memorial, MLK Jr. Memorial and the Washington Monument before hitting the home stretch on the Kutz Bridge. The morning was capped off with some tasty pizza for walkers to enjoy before leaving the Park.
NCC’s financial support and active participation in the Walk4Hearing mirrors our dedication to providing real-time captioning, open and closed caption videos, and Computer Assisted Realtime Translation (CART) through our LiveWriteTM application to the hearing-impaired community.
NCC is honored to include HLAA among the charitable organizations we support. We congratulate HLAA on raising more than $1.2 million through this year’s Walk4Hearing, over $54,000 of which was raised through the Washington, D.C. Walk, and we look forward to increasing NCC’s total in 2013.
