NCC to Create “Thoughtful Treasures” for the Children’s Inn at NIH

Children's Inn

The Children’s Inn at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) opened its doors in 1990 to offer kids and their families a comfortable place to stay – at no charge – while the children receive medical treatment at NIH.  Since that time, organizations, companies, and individuals have volunteered their time and money in a number of ways to bring happiness to the thousands of children who have stayed at the Children’s Inn.

One of the newest ways in which to uplift a child at the Children’s Inn is the Thoughtful Treasures initiative.  On February 28th, NCC employees will participate in Thoughtful Treasures, as we will craft small gift baskets for residents of the Inn to receive in their mailboxes.  When each child checks into the Children’s Inn, they – along with siblings – receive a key to their own mailbox where they can find a “Thoughtful Treasure” awaiting them every day.  These daily gifts brighten the child’s day during their time at the Inn.

Since 2002, NCC has been privileged to provide a variety of services to NIH; and since 2013, we have proudly supported the Children’s Inn.  The Children’s Inn provides a family support system for children receiving last-hope treatment at the NIH. The Children’s Inn is a comforting place for children to stay in between treatments and hospitalizations; “a place like home” where families can stay together and find mutual support from other families staying at the Inn.  Without the Children’s Inn, some families may not be able to have their children participate in studies at the NIH because the cost of staying in a hotel for the duration of the treatment could be prohibitive.

In addition, on February 24th, NCC will participate in A WINNter Affair, an event which benefits the Children’s Inn.  Our Multimedia and Production Division Manager serves on the host committee for the event, assisting in outreach and fundraising efforts on NCC’s behalf.

Furthermore, for the fifth consecutive year, NCC will serve as a sponsor for the annual An Evening for Hope event, which takes place on April 28th at the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner, VA.  All proceeds go to the Children’s Inn.  We will provide more details about this event as it approaches.

In the meantime, we look forward to taking a break from our workday on February 28th to create our Thoughtful Treasures, and we hope our creations bring a smile to the faces of the children who are staying at the Children’s Inn.  Any organization, group, or individual can create items to donate for Thoughtful Treasures; learn more here, email meghan.abegast@nih.gov, or call 301-594-5364.
